Chef Les Broadbent was
born in Yorkshire, England. He trained and apprenticed under chef John
Walker, in a small hotel in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. Chef Walker is now Dean of the Faculty of Hospitality
and Tourism, George Brown College in Toronto.
After immigrating to Canada in 1976, Les worked at Rundles in Stratford, Ontario before moving on to the famous Church restaurant also in Stratford. He then accepted a position at Fenton’s restaurant, Toronto's movie and advertising hot spot of the 70's. In 1980, Les moved to Markham where he worked as first chef at the newly renovated Duchess of Markham before going on to open a new upscale restaurant just down the road from the Duchess called Mainstreet.
It was after Mainstreet, that Les moved north to Stouffville, to what was then a small teashop that
served light lunches and afternoon tea – The Corner House in Stouffville. Since taking over, Les has
been continuously improving and expanding both the restaurant and the menu. It has become 'the' place to go in Stouffville
for great food in an elegant, but also warm and friendly, environment.
The Corner House is now in it's 24th year and Les’s son Kyle has joined him. Kyle has been working steadily at the restaurant for the past 10 years and is gradually (under Les’s watchful eye) taking over all duties in the kitchen but you’ll still find Les out front being his usual friendly and hospitable self.
